Which Barcode Type Do You Need?

  • Code 128 — the modern general-purpose format: letters, numbers and symbols in a compact code. Best default for internal use, logistics and asset tags.
  • Code 39 — older alphanumeric standard (A–Z, 0–9, a few symbols); still common in industry and defense.
  • EAN-13 / EAN-8 — worldwide retail product codes; EAN-8 is the short version for small packages. Digits only.
  • UPC-A — the North American retail standard, 11–12 digits.
  • ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5) — even-digit-count numeric codes used on shipping cartons.

Note: to sell products in retail stores you need officially assigned GS1 numbers — the generator renders any valid number, but uniqueness in shops comes from GS1 registration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my EAN-13 input fail?

EAN-13 needs exactly 12 or 13 digits (letters are not allowed). Enter 12 digits and the check digit is computed for you; enter 13 and the last digit must be a valid check digit.

What is the difference between a barcode and a QR code?

A 1D barcode stores a short identifier (typically 8–20 characters) that a database looks up; a QR code stores the data itself, up to thousands of characters, and scans from any angle. Retail checkout uses barcodes; marketing links use QR codes.

Can I use these barcodes for products in stores?

The images are fully scannable, but retail requires globally unique numbers assigned by GS1. Generate codes freely for internal inventory, assets and tickets; register with GS1 before selling through retailers.

PNG or SVG for printing labels?

SVG whenever your label software accepts it — vector bars stay razor-sharp at any print size. For PNG, generate at a high thickness setting and never scale the image up afterwards.
