Discount Calculator

Find sale prices, savings, markup and margin in seconds.

What Does the Discount Calculator Do?

This calculator answers the checkout question instantly: what do I actually pay, and what do I save? Enter the original price and discount percentage and get the sale price, the money saved, and — crucially for stacked promotions — the effective total discount when an extra percentage is applied on top. A second mode handles the seller's side: enter cost and markup percentage to get the selling price, profit and true profit margin.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Discount mode — enter the original price and the discount %; optionally add a second "extra" discount (the "additional 10% off sale items" kind). Results update live.
  2. Markup mode — switch tabs, enter your cost and markup %; read the selling price, profit and margin.

The Math Shops Hope You Won't Do

  • Stacked discounts don't add — 25% off plus an extra 10% off is 32.5% total, not 35%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price. The effective-discount readout exposes this instantly.
  • Markup ≠ margin — a 40% markup on cost yields only a 28.6% margin on the selling price. Mixing these up is one of the most common small-business pricing errors; the markup panel shows both, correctly.
  • Compare absolute savings — 30% off a €50 item saves less than 15% off a €200 item. The "you save" figure keeps comparisons honest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are double discounts calculated?

Sequentially: the extra discount applies to the already-discounted price. 100 with 25% + extra 10% = 100 × 0.75 × 0.90 = 67.50, a 32.5% effective discount — not 35%.

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit relative to cost; margin is profit relative to selling price. Cost 50, markup 40% → price 70, profit 20 → margin 20/70 = 28.6%. The calculator reports both so pricing decisions use the right number.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). Paid 60 at 25% off? Original = 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80. Enter 80 and 25% in the calculator to verify.

What markup do I need for a target margin?

Markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin). For a 30% margin you need a 42.9% markup. Try values in the markup panel and watch the margin readout until it hits your target.
